John Carter Brown Library - Peru Collection

The John Carter Brown Library has one of the five largest collections of early Peruviana in the world. It is not just the number of Peruvian imprints of the colonial, independence, and early national periods held by the John Carter Brown Library that is important, however, but the diversity of those materials and in a great many instances, their singularity - being only known copies. The subjects range from ecclesiastical matters, to government papers, to indigenous language studies, and important literary works.

The first work known to include a section on the grammar and vocabulary of the dialect employed by "los indios del antiguo arzobispado de Lima" according to Medina: "Vocabulario de la lengua chinchaisuyo, y algunos modos mas vsados en dicha lengua" by Father Figueredo (leaves 53v.h59r.). What is stated in the second edition (Lima, 1754) of this revised and augmented version of Torres Rubio is "... por las repetidas missiones con que h corrido todo el Arzobispado de...

There are two Lima 1616 versions of this work that have been confused with one another. This version (B616.T689a1) includes the reprint of the Seville, 1604 edition of the "Catecismo en la lengua española y aymara del Piru." The other version (B616.T689a2) does not. They also differ in signatures and foliation. Although Medina claims to have seen "otros dos ejemplares ..., pero ambos sin dicho Catecismo," apparently he confused the one version (B616.T689a1) with the other...

[16], 142, [2], [143-162], [2] p. ;|c16 cm. (8vo) Given its brevity, this item could just as easily have been printed in 1701 as in 1702. The aprobaciones and licencias date from 15-17 Dec. 1701. Moreover, it is not known if this version of the "Cathecismo en lengua espa©ola, y moxa" included the "Cartilla, y doctrina cristiana en lengua moxa" (Lima, 1702)
